By-law 2026-085: Park Landmark Preservation By-law
About this by-law
By-law 2026-085, the Park Landmark Preservation By-law, sets the rules for placing commemorative plaques, memorials and landmark markers in Wrenford parks. It makes sure these features are installed safely, maintained properly and fit with the natural surroundings.
What it does
If you want to honour a person, event or park feature with a plaque or memorial, you must follow the process in this by-law. The City reviews every application to make sure the design, materials and location are appropriate. Once your request is approved by Council at a regular meeting, the name or dedication is added to the official City map and wayfinding signs. All new park features must follow the City's naming conventions so visitors can easily find their way.
Who it applies to
This by-law applies to any resident, community group, business or developer who wants to install a commemorative marker in a municipal park. It does not cover private property or parks run by independent boards.
Fees and how to apply
A fee of $250.00 covers the application review and plaque installation. To apply for a Heritage Landmark Plaque, you must submit your completed application by October 10, 2026. You can pick up forms at Wrenford City Hall or download them from our website. The Parks & Trails team reviews submissions and forwards approved requests to Council for final sign-off.
Penalties
Installing a plaque or memorial without an approved permit is a violation. Under the Municipal Act, 2001, fines for a first offence start at $500.00 and can go up to $2,500.00 for repeat violations. The City can also remove unapproved markers at the owner's expense.
Effective date and changes
This by-law takes effect on July 1, 2026. It replaces the old park marker guidelines and works alongside the Sign bylaw framework and the Zoning bylaws and land use.
