By-law 2026-050: Patio and Outdoor Seating By-law
Purpose
This by-law makes sure that outdoor dining areas on public sidewalks are safe for everyone. It sets clear rules for how businesses can use the sidewalk space for tables, chairs, and planters.
What it does
If you run a restaurant, café, or bar that wants to set up a patio on a public sidewalk, you need a permit. This by-law covers where you can place your seating, how much space you can take, and what safety barriers you must install. It also explains when your permit expires and how to renew it. All setups must keep the sidewalk clear for pedestrians, including people using wheelchairs or strollers.
Who it applies to
It applies to all property owners and business operators in Wrenford who wish to use public right-of-way for outdoor seating.
Fines
Operating a patio without a permit, or ignoring the safety rules, can lead to fines. You may also receive a fine under By-law 2026-050 if your setup blocks the sidewalk or fails inspection. By-law officers will remove non-compliant structures, and you will be responsible for all removal and disposal costs. Please dismantle wooden structures and secure all metal frames before disposal to keep recycling facilities safe.
When it takes effect
Council passed this by-law on April 13, 2026, at the Council meeting, April 13, 2026. It officially comes into force on June 1, 2026, ahead of the summer season.
