By-law 2024-088: Vehicle for Hire By-law 2024-088

Purpose

This by-law updates the rules for vehicle for hire services in Wrenford. It focuses on how drivers get licensed and where passengers can legally be picked up.

What it does

Under this by-law, all for-hire vehicles operating in Wrenford must hold a current business licence. The City streamlined the application process so you can register online through the Business Licences portal. The City updated the designated passenger pickup zones to reduce congestion near major transit hubs and shopping areas. Drivers must now use the marked bays at the Downtown Transit Terminal and the Northgate Aquatic Centre. Other designated zones are listed on the City's website. If you pick up a passenger outside of Wrenford and drop them off inside the city limits, you are still required to have a valid licence. Licensed vehicles must display their permit clearly on the dashboard or windshield so riders can easily identify them.

Who it applies to

This by-law applies to every taxi, rideshare driver, and for-hire transportation service that operates within the City of Wrenford. It does not cover personal vehicles used for carpooling without payment.

Fines

Operating a for-hire vehicle without a valid licence is a violation. First-time offenders may face a fine of $250.00. Repeat offences can result in higher penalties and possible suspension of the operator's permit.

When it takes effect

By-law 2024-088 came into effect on July 1, 2024, following its passage by Council on June 24, 2024.

What it amends

This by-law amends the existing vehicle for hire regulations to align with the current Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. It replaces outdated pickup zone maps and updates the fee schedule for annual and seasonal permits.
