By-law 2024-072: A by-law to amend Patio and Outdoor Seating By-law (opening summer patio permits)
Purpose
This by-law updates the rules for outdoor dining and seating in the downtown core. It allows businesses to apply for summer patio permits and expand their seating areas onto the sidewalk.
What it does
The amendment sets out clear steps for applying. You will need to submit a completed application form, pay the required fee, and provide proof of liability insurance. All patios must follow safety standards, keep walkways clear for pedestrians, and stay within the approved footprint. The City will review each application to make sure it does not block sight lines or create hazards.
Who it applies to
This by-law applies to all commercial establishments located in the downtown core. It does not change the rules for private patios on residential properties.
Fines if any
If you do not follow the new rules, you could face a fine of up to $2,500.00 on conviction under the Provincial Offences Act. You can find more details about enforcement on the By-law Enforcement page.
When it takes effect
The by-law was passed by Council on May 27, 2024, and took effect on that same day.
What it amends or repeals
It amends the existing Patio and Outdoor Seating By-law to keep up with the growing number of downtown merchants who want to offer outdoor seating.
