By-law 2018-045: Tree Protection By-law

The Tree Protection By-law 2018-045 protects the mature trees that give Wrenford its green character. Trees clean our air, absorb rainwater and provide homes for birds and wildlife. This by-law makes sure we keep them safe during construction projects and everyday life.

What the by-law covers

This by-law applies to all trees in Wrenford. It sets out clear rules for trees on public land, like streets, parks and the Corvid Creek Ravine, as well as trees on private property. You cannot remove or prune a protected tree without a permit from the City. A protected tree is one that meets certain size requirements set out in the by-law.

Planting new trees

If you are planting a new tree on your property, you must follow the by-law. This means keeping a safe distance from utility lines and property boundaries so the tree can grow safely. Call 811 before you dig to locate underground lines. You can also check the Tree protection bylaws page for more details. All trees distributed through City programs must also follow these planting rules.

Fines and enforcement

By-law Enforcement Officers monitor compliance. If you remove a protected tree without a permit or damage a tree during construction, you may receive a fine. Fines can range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 depending on the size of the tree and the extent of the damage.

When it takes effect

Council passed this by-law on April 9, 2018. It is fully in force now.

A certified copy of the by-law is available from the Clerk's Office at Wrenford City Hall.
