By-law 2017-098: Smoking Regulation By-law
Why this by-law exists
The Smoking Regulation By-law 2017-098 keeps our public spaces safe and healthy for everyone. It bans smoking, vaping, and the use of e-cigarettes in all City parks, trails, and facilities. This rule applies to residents and visitors alike.
What it means for you
When you visit a City park, trail, or facility, you must keep smoking and vaping at least six metres away from park entrances, washrooms, playgrounds, and sports fields. If you see a fire hazard or smell smoke in a restricted area, call 911 right away. For non-emergency issues like a broken grill or a fallen sign, contact City Services.
Fines and enforcement
By-law Enforcement Officers can issue tickets for violations. A first offence carries a fine of $150.00. Repeat offences within a year result in higher penalties under the Provincial Offences Act.
When it takes effect
This by-law took effect on January 1, 2018. It amends previous smoking guidelines and fully repeals the older park smoking notice from 2012, creating one clear set of rules for all outdoor City spaces.
