By-law 2020-045: Security Alarm Permit By-law

Purpose

This by-law explains how to get a permit for your commercial or industrial security alarm in Wrenford, and what happens if it sounds without a real emergency.

What it does

You must register your security alarm system with the City before you can turn it on. The permit covers alarms that are monitored and those that are not. If your alarm goes off without a real emergency, it is a false alarm. You must keep your keyholder list up to date and have your system inspected every year by a licensed technician. This helps the City avoid unnecessary calls to police and fire crews.

Who it applies to

Any business or property owner operating a commercial or industrial site in Wrenford that uses a security or fire alarm system.

Fines and penalties

Three false alarms in a 12-month period will result in a 30-day suspension of your permit. If your alarm continues to sound without reason after that, you will need to reapply for a new permit and pay the full fee. A $250.00 fine applies for each false alarm beyond the allowed limit.

When it takes effect

Council passed this by-law on April 13, 2020, and it took effect immediately.

Amendments and repeals

This by-law replaces previous temporary registration guidelines and puts them into a permanent municipal rule under the Municipal Act, 2001.
