By-law 2018-063: Responsible Pet Ownership By-law
The Responsible Pet Ownership By-law 2018-063 helps keep Wrenford's pets safe and our neighbourhoods tidy. It covers pet licensing, leash requirements, and the rules for keeping animals on your property.
What it does
Every dog and cat in Wrenford must be licensed. A licence gives your pet a permanent stainless steel tag. If your pet goes missing, the tag is the fastest way to reunite you. You can register your pet online or at Wrenford City Hall. The by-law also covers nuisance animals and how to handle aggressive pets.
Leash and property rules
Dogs must be on a leash when outside your property, unless you are in an official off-leash area. Animals must not create a nuisance by barking, howling, or leaving waste on public or private property. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pet in parks and on sidewalks.
Aggressive or dangerous dogs
If a dog has bitten someone or shown aggressive behaviour, By-law Enforcement will investigate. The by-law sets strict rules for dogs declared dangerous: the dog must be muzzled and on a leash when outside, kept in a secure enclosure, and spayed or neutered. Owners must carry liability insurance.
Fines
Violating this by-law can cost up to $150.00 per offence. Repeat violations or serious breaches may lead to higher fines or court action.
Who it applies to
This by-law applies to all residents, visitors, and property owners within Wrenford city limits.
When it takes effect
Council passed this by-law on May 14, 2018, and it took effect immediately upon adoption. It has been updated over the years to reflect current provincial standards under the Dog Owners' Liability Act and the Prevention to Cruelty Act.
A certified copy of the by-law is available from the Clerk's office at Wrenford City Hall or through the online by-law search portal.
