By-law 2020-085: Heritage Conservation By-law

Welcome to the summary page for the Heritage Conservation By-law. This by-law helps us protect Wrenford's historic buildings and neighbourhoods so future generations can enjoy them. If your property is on the Wrenford Heritage Register or sits inside a designated heritage conservation district, you must follow these rules before changing the outside of your building.

What the by-law does

The Heritage Conservation By-law 2020-085 protects our shared history by ensuring that any updates respect the original character of your home or business. It sets clear rules for making changes to heritage properties. This covers things like adding a new window, replacing a roof, painting an exterior wall, or building a porch. You cannot make exterior changes without first getting a heritage alteration permit.

Who it applies to

This by-law applies to any property owner whose building is listed on the Wrenford Heritage Register or located within a heritage conservation district, such as the Mill Street Heritage Conservation District. It also applies to developers and contractors working on these properties.

Fines and penalties

If you make exterior changes without the required permit, you could face a fine of up to $10,000.00 for a first offence and $20,000.00 for each day the violation continues. The City can also order you to undo the changes and restore the property to its original look.

When it takes effect

Council passed this by-law on June 22, 2020, and it took effect immediately upon passing. It works alongside the Ontario Heritage Act and guides the work of the Heritage Advisory Committee, which advises City Council and City staff on matters related to Wrenford's built heritage.
