Learn about park maintenance services

Find out how the city maintains parks, trails, playgrounds, and splash pads, plus how to report issues and book permits.

Keep your parks clean, safe, and ready for use all year round. The Parks and Trails team maintains over 20 city parks, 64 kilometres of the Tamsin River Trail System, splash pads, playgrounds, and public washrooms. We handle everything from grass cutting and trash collection to playground inspections and winter trail clearing.

What we maintain

Our crews visit every park and trail regularly. You will see us mowing lawns, picking up litter, cleaning public washrooms, and checking playground equipment for safety. We also manage pest control, tree trimming, and catch-basin larviciding to keep mosquitoes down from June to September.

Seasonal schedule

Maintenance work follows the seasons. In spring, we sweep streets and regrade trail surfaces in late April and October. Splash pads open daily from late June to Labour Day, running from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. during warm weather. During winter, the Winter Trail Clearing Programme clears selected paths from November to March so you can walk or cross-country ski safely. We also remove garbage and recyclables on the regular collection schedule, and we clear snow from park roads and parking lots after major storms.

How to report an issue

Found a broken bench, overflowing trash bin, or unsafe playground equipment? Report it quickly using the online form. We triage playground safety concerns within two business days. For sidewalk and pathway issues, we inspect any trip hazard that is four centimetres or higher. You can also call 311 or email the parks team at [email protected]. Please include your neighbourhood and a clear description of the problem so we can send the right crew.

Permits and special rules

Standard park use is free. However, certain activities require a permit or follow specific rules to protect the space for everyone.

  • Commercial fitness classes: Instructors need a Commercial Fitness Park Permit. The application fee is $75.00, and the hourly rate is $50.00 for up to 15 participants.
  • Pathways and boardwalks: Installing a garden pathway or ramp requires a Park Pathway Permit. You must submit a plan, show $2,000,000 in liability insurance, and allow a two-year permit duration.
  • Barbecues and fire pits: Grills must be at least 75 centimetres tall. Propane fire pits require a special city permit. Watch for Park fire hazard rating notices that may restrict open flames during dry weather.
  • Geocaching and memorials: Follow the participation guidelines to avoid digging in natural areas. The Park Asset Donation Programme accepts contributions of $2,000.00 or more for benches or trees, which the city will maintain for ten years under a 75-character plaque limit.
  • Dogs and wildlife: Off-leash areas are open from dawn to dusk. Keep dogs on a six-metre leash on shared trails. Use the dog water fountains at Ambrel Lake Park and Benchlands Lookout Park.

Get involved

We host Spring Park Sweep Volunteer Days on the first Saturday of each month from May to September. Residents can join crews to pick up litter and help with light weeding. Check the event calendar for dates and meeting points.
