Estimate your building permit fees

Use the Building Permit Fee Calculator to get an estimate for your project. The tool covers new homes, commercial buildings, multi-family housing, demolition, and trade permits. It provides a rough estimate based on the declared value of your construction work. For exact fees, see the official fee schedule.

Project types

Solar panels

A building permit is required whenever solar panels are installed on roof or wall structures. If your solar project includes structural upgrades to the roof or walls, the calculator will factor in the cost of those upgrades. If the panels are mounted on the ground and not attached to a building, a building permit is not required. Electrical work for solar panels must be handled by a licensed electrician and inspected by Technical Safety Ontario.

Important notes

  • The calculator provides an estimate only. It cannot be used as an official interpretation of the Ontario Building Code or local by-laws.
  • Fees are based on the total declared value of the construction work. Under-declaring the value can result in penalties.
  • Work cannot begin until the permit is issued and the fee is paid. Starting work early may lead to a surcharge or a stop-work order.
  • For detailed fee breakdowns, visit the fee schedule or contact Planning and Development.
