Overview

You need a building permit to install solar panels on your roof or walls. This rule protects the safety of your home and the structural integrity of the building. Solar panels add weight to your roof, so the structure may need to be checked or upgraded to hold them securely.

Placement rules

Your solar panels must follow the rules in Zoning By-law 2016-040. Panels can be mounted on your roof or on a wall. They cannot be placed on the ground in your yard without a separate development permit.

  • Roof-mounted panels: Must not extend beyond the outer edge of your roof. They may project slightly from the roof surface depending on the roof's slope and your property line, but they must stay within the approved area.
  • Wall-mounted panels: Must be installed at least 2.4 metres above the ground. They can project up to 0.6 metres from the wall surface.

If you are not sure if your property is in a heritage area, check with our Arts & Heritage team, as different rules may apply.

Structural requirements

Roofs and walls are built to handle normal weather loads like snow, wind, and rain. Solar panels add extra weight. A licensed professional must confirm that your roof or wall can support the panels. If upgrades are needed, you will need to complete those before the panels are installed. We will check these upgrades during the building inspection.

Electrical permits

Installing solar panels also requires an electrical permit from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Only a licensed electrician can apply for this permit and do the wiring work. Make sure your installer handles the TSSA permit before the panels go up.

How to apply

  1. Download the Solar Energy Permit Application Package. This package includes the application form and a checklist of the drawings and reports you need to submit.
  2. Fill out the forms and attach all required documents. Make sure the property owner or an authorized agent signs the application.
  3. Submit your application through the Wrenford Permit Portal or drop it off at the Service Wrenford counter at City Hall.

Incomplete applications will be returned. Please review the checklist carefully before submitting.

Fees and processing time

Building permit fees for solar installations are based on the construction value of the structural work. A standard residential installation starts at a base fee of $250.00. Commercial or industrial installations are calculated differently. You can check the full fee schedule for details. Payment can be made online, by phone, or in person at City Hall. Your permit will not be issued until the fee is paid.

Staff will review your application and respond within 10 business days. You will receive an approval notice or a letter explaining what needs to be fixed before the permit is issued.

Inspections

Once your permit is approved, you can book your inspections through the Wrenford Permit Portal. Inspections are available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • Structural inspection: We will check that your roof or wall has been properly reinforced, if required.
  • Final inspection: We will verify that the panels are securely mounted and that the installation matches your approved plans.

Do not start any work until you have your approved permit and drawings. Starting work without a permit can result in fines and may require you to remove the panels.
