Building inspections

Learn how to book, prepare for, and reschedule your building permit inspections in Wrenford.

Who handles inspections

All building inspections are managed by the City of Wrenford's Planning and Development department. Wendy Szabo is the Chief Building Official for our city. Her team makes sure that all construction matches your permit plans and meets the Ontario Building Code. They check that your work is safe, accessible, and built to the right standards.

How to book an inspection

You can book an inspection online through the Wrenford Permit Portal. If you do not have an account, you can create one using your Job Access Code (JAC). The JAC is included in your permit approval email. You can also call Service Wrenford at 519-555-0100 or dial 311 from a city phone.

Inspections take place Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can book up to 10 business days in advance. If you submit your request before 2:00 p.m. on a business day, we will try to schedule it for the next business day. You will receive a confirmation email with your appointment details.

Common inspection stages

  • Pre-construction: verifying site conditions, setbacks, and erosion control.
  • Foundation: before concrete is poured or backfill begins.
  • Framing: after walls and roofs are framed, before insulation.
  • Insulation and rough-ins: plumbing, electrical, and mechanical before drywall or interior finishes.
  • Final: when the building is complete, all systems are installed, and ready for occupancy.

Some projects, like secondary suites or accessory buildings, may have fewer stages. The Permit Portal will show exactly which inspections your project requires and their order.

Preparing for your inspection

An adult over the age of 18 must be present at the site to let the inspector in. If you are the permit holder or a licensed contractor, you can provide lockbox or key access details in the online booking form. This allows unaccompanied inspections for new, unoccupied construction only. Inspectors will not use lockbox access if a building is occupied or contains personal belongings.

Make sure your site is safe and accessible. Remove debris, secure pets, and ensure all required safety measures are in place. The inspector needs clear access to the foundation, framing, and all mechanical systems. If the inspector cannot access the site or find the required work, the inspection will fail.

Rescheduling and reinspection fees

If you need to change your inspection date, you can do so online or by calling 519-555-0100. You must cancel or reschedule before 2:00 p.m. on the business day before your appointment to avoid a fee.

Reinspection fees apply under the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151 if:

  • The work is not ready at the scheduled time.
  • The inspector must uncover work to see it.
  • Previous deficiencies were not fixed.
  • You cancel after the 2:00 p.m. deadline.

You must pay any outstanding reinspection fees before booking future inspections on your project. Fees can be paid online through your permit account or in person at Wrenford City Hall.
