Who needs an electrical permit?

You must get an electrical permit before doing most electrical work in Wrenford. This includes installing new circuits, upgrading your service panel, adding outlets, or wiring a new building. You do not need a permit to replace a broken light switch, fuse, or outlet with the same type, or to do minor repairs covered by an existing annual permit.

Who can apply?

Only a licensed electrical contractor with a valid City business licence can apply for an electrical permit. If you are a homeowner working on your own detached single-family home, you may apply yourself. You must own and live in the home, the home cannot contain a secondary suite or rental unit, and your electrical service must be 200 amps or less. You are also responsible for knowing the work and passing all inspections.

How to apply

Follow these steps to submit your application:

  1. Download the Electrical Permit Application Form from the Building Permits page.
  2. Complete the form and attach any required drawings or single-line diagrams.
  3. Submit the form and pay the application fee online through the city's permit portal.

Processing times and fees

We process simple electrical permits within 5 business days. Permits that require detailed plan review, such as new commercial installations or large multi-unit residential projects, take up to 25 business days. Fees are set out in the city's fees and charges by-law. The base application fee is $150.00 for residential work and $300.00 for commercial work. Fees are payable at the time of submission.

Inspections

All electrical work must be inspected to be finalized. Inspections typically include a rough-in inspection before you cover any walls or conduits, and a final inspection once the work is complete. You can schedule inspections using the Wrenford Permit Portal. Inspections require two weeks' notice. If work fails inspection, you will need to book a re-inspection and pay a re-inspection fee under By-law 2025-151.
