What work requires a mechanical permit

All heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) installations in new buildings and renovations require a mechanical permit. This includes furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, ventilation fans, and exhaust systems.

Homeowner restrictions

Under Ontario law, homeowners are not allowed to do work that involves natural gas. Permits for mechanical work must be applied for and the work must be done by a certified, licensed mechanical contractor.

How to apply

We process mechanical permits through the Wrenford ePlan Portal. You will need to create an account, upload your drawings, complete the application form, and pay the fee online.

  • Prepare your mechanical drawings and any required reports.
  • Complete the Mechanical permit application form.
  • Upload your documents as PDF files. Keep drawings separate from forms and reports.
  • Submit the package through the portal.

Checklists and forms

Use the appropriate checklist to make sure your application is complete before you submit it:

Fees and processing times

The standard mechanical trade permit fee is $155.00. Other fees depend on the size and complexity of the project. View the complete building and trade permit fee schedule.

Applications are reviewed within five to ten business days for simple permits, or fifteen to twenty-five business days for larger projects requiring detailed plan review.

After approval

Once your permit is approved, you must post the approved permit document and drawings on-site before starting work. You can book your inspections through the portal. We ask that you schedule inspections at least two business days before you need them.
