Who can apply
Only a licensed contractor or certified gas fitter can apply for a gas permit in Wrenford. If you are a homeowner, you can only apply if you hold a journeyman gasfitter certification and you are working on a single-family home that you live in or plan to live in. You must apply in person at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, during business hours and bring proof of your qualifications.
What work needs a permit
You need a gas permit for any work that installs, alters, or adds to a gas system. This includes:
- Installing or replacing a furnace, boiler, or heating unit
- Running new gas lines for stoves, dryers, or fireplaces
- Relocating a gas meter
- Installing a gas fireplace or fireplace insert
- Using temporary gas or propane heaters on construction sites
When using temporary heat sources on a job site, you must have the proper permits in place. A Wrenford safety codes officer will visit your site to verify that all conditions are safe. All equipment must be approved, properly set up, and maintained. Propane tanks and cylinders must stay upright and be protected from vehicles and moving equipment. You must also follow clearance rules for property lines and ignition sources.

Permit fees
Fees are updated annually. Current rates are listed in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. You can use the Building permit fee calculator to get an estimate for your project. Please remember that permit fees cover the cost of scheduling inspections at various stages of your work.
Scheduling inspections
Most gas installations require at least two safety codes inspections:
- A rough-in inspection before you cover any pipes with drywall, insulation, or concrete
- A final inspection once the installation is completely finished and tested
You must book your inspection at least one business day in advance. Call 311 inside the city limits, or dial 519-555-0140. You can also book online through the Wrenford ePlan Portal. Requests made by 2:00 p.m. can usually be scheduled for the next business day. The operator will tell you if your inspection is set for the morning or afternoon.
Important rules and safety
All gas work must follow the Ontario Building Code and the National Plumbing Code of Canada. If an inspector finds a problem, you must fix it before proceeding. Re-inspection fees apply if work is not ready, if access is blocked, or if you need to uncover completed work. For technical help or code questions, contact our safety codes officers at 519-555-0140 or email [email protected].
