On November 15, 2023, the newly elected City Council officially begins its four-year term. In its first week, the council has approved a city-wide review of the Garbage & Recycling program to ensure the system is efficient, equitable, and ready for future growth.
The review will examine all aspects of residential and commercial waste handling, including black cart garbage, Blue Bin recycling, and Green Bin organics services. It will also evaluate the effectiveness of the Waste Management By-law 2023-105 and how by-law officers enforce rules around proper sorting and storage.
Wrenford is working toward a 60 per cent waste diversion rate by 2030. The review will look for ways to reduce contamination in the bins, expand the Waste Wise Schools programme to more classrooms, and improve outreach to businesses through the commercial waste collection team. Staff will also assess whether the current collection frequencies match the needs of newer neighbourhoods like Wildrye and Copper Ridge.
"Our waste system has served Wrenford well, but we need to adapt to new provincial producer rules and growing neighbourhoods," says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "This review ensures we are building a system that is efficient, fair, and focused on keeping our rivers and parks clean for the next generation."
Public consultations will begin in early 2024. You can share feedback through the community portal or by attending a local council meeting. For current collection schedules, sorting tips, and information on household hazardous waste drop-offs, visit the Garbage & Recycling page.
