Check your collection schedule

Your green bin collects food scraps and yard waste. We collect it on a regular schedule so you can keep your home tidy and help Wrenford divert waste from the landfill. You can view your exact pickup day by visiting the collection schedule.

Single-family homes and duplexes: We collect your green bin every week.

Multi-family properties (apartments, condos, townhouses): We collect green bins every other week. Check your schedule to confirm your pickup day.

Christmas trees: We collect Christmas trees curbside during the first two weeks of January. Place your tree at the curb on your regular collection day. Do not bag it. Learn more in the Christmas tree recycling and composting guide.

Prepare your green bin

Follow these simple steps to make collection smooth and safe for our crews.

  • Leave the lid open: Keep the lid slightly ajar so collection crews can see inside. We will close it for you.
  • No bags: Do not line your green bin with plastic bags. If you use a paper bag or a compostable liner inside the bin, you must remove it before collection.
  • Watch the weight: Keep your green bin under 10 kilograms. Heavy bins are difficult for crews to handle and can damage the collection trucks.
  • Place it properly: Set your bin at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Leave at least one metre of space between bins and vehicles.

What goes in the green bin

Our green bin programme accepts a wide range of organic materials. We turn these items into nutrient-rich compost for our parks and local farms.

  • Raw and cooked food scraps (meat, fish, bones, dairy, eggs, bread, pasta, sauces)
  • Fruit and vegetable peels, rinds, and cores
  • Coffee grounds and filters, tea bags (remove staples)
  • Small amounts of soiled paper towels, napkins, and paper plates
  • Yard waste like grass clippings, leaves, and small branches (no larger than a pencil)
  • Houseplant soil and compost

Do not put these items in your green bin:

  • Plastic bags, including "biodegradable" or "compostable" liners
  • Liquids, oils, or grease
  • Pet waste, cat litter, or kitty litter
  • Diapers, sanitary products, or tissues
  • Large branches, stumps, or rocks
  • Construction debris or glass

If you are not sure where an item goes, use the Waste Wizard online lookup tool.

Yard waste and leaf collection

From April to the end of November, we collect paper yard-waste bags on a biweekly schedule. You can buy official brown paper yard-waste bags at most local grocers or at City Hall.

Place your bags at the curb on the same day as your green bin. Do not tie the bags tightly; leave the top open so crews can easily lift them.

What you can put in a paper yard-waste bag:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves and small twigs
  • Flowers and garden plants
  • Small branches (no larger than a pencil)

What you cannot put in a paper yard-waste bag:

  • Soil, rocks, or construction debris
  • Plastic bags or compostable liners
  • Large tree branches or stumps
  • Food scraps (put these in your green bin)

Remember to follow the Clean Yards By-law 2019-113 to keep our neighbourhoods tidy and safe.

Fees and by-laws

Your green bin service is included in your property tax bill. If you need a second green bin, or a larger bin for a multi-family property, there is a small annual fee.

  • Second green bin: $45.00 per year
  • Large green bin (240 L or 360 L): $75.00 per year

Updated fees will appear on your next property tax notice. To order a new bin or make a payment, visit City Services or call 519-555-0100.
