Find out where your stuff goes
Every household in Wrenford produces waste, and knowing how to sort it correctly keeps our city clean and our recycling programs running smoothly. The Waste Wizard is our free online sorting tool. Just type in the name of an item, and the guide tells you whether it belongs in your black cart, your blue bin, your green bin, or a local drop-off depot.
You can use the Waste Wizard on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Visit the tool online at any time to check rules for unusual items, seasonal changes, or special waste.
Quick sorting guide
If you are getting ready for collection day, here is a quick refresher on the three main streams:
- Black cart (garbage): Items that cannot be recycled or composted. This includes plastic bags, styrofoam, wet wipes, and dirty food containers. Keep bags under 10 kilograms and bundle them loosely.
- Blue bin (recycling): Clean paper, cardboard, metal cans, and plastic containers. Remember to flatten cardboard and keep plastic bags out of the bin—take them to a depot instead.
- Green bin (organics): Food scraps, yard waste, and compostable paper products. Place all items loose in the bin without plastic bags.
Special items and drop-off depots
Some items need special handling. The Waste Wizard shows you exactly how to dispose of them, but here are a few highlights:
- Mattresses: Mattresses are recyclable and cannot go in the garbage. Residents get two free recycling visits per calendar year through the Mattress Recycling Voucher Programme. After that, a $25.00 per mattress fee applies at the landfill.
- Electronics: Drop off old phones, laptops, and small appliances at any fire station or the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Remember to remove personal data before you bring them in.
- Batteries: Never throw batteries in your blue bin or black cart. Take them to a Call2Recycle smart bin at any fire hall or City facility.
- Needles and syringes: Use a sharps container and drop it off at a fire station, the Northgate Drop-off Depot, or participating local pharmacies.
- Household hazardous waste: Paints, solvents, and automotive fluids go to the seasonal drop-off depot from May to October at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. It is free for residents.
- Construction waste: Shingles and drywall must be prepared according to city rules before you drop them off. Loads over 20 tonnes need advance notice by phone.
