Waste management bylaw and regulations

Learn the rules for sorting, collecting, and disposing of waste in Wrenford. Find out what the bylaw requires for homes, businesses, and multi-unit buildings.

About the waste management bylaw

The City of Wrenford's By-law 2026-045 sets clear rules for how trash, recycling, and food waste are collected, sorted, and disposed of. The goal is to keep our community clean, protect the environment, and extend the life of the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. This bylaw applies to every resident, property owner, and business in the city.

What the rules cover

Residential properties

If you live in a single-family home, your waste is collected on a regular schedule. You must place your black cart for garbage, blue bin for recycling, and green bin for food scraps at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day. The blue box is collected on the same day as your green bin. Never mix these materials. Contaminated carts will not be emptied.

Multi-unit buildings

If you own or manage an apartment, condominium, or townhouse complex with four or more units, you are responsible for providing waste services to your tenants. You must hire a private waste hauler from the Multi-family Hauler Registry or use a service that meets City standards. You must also submit an annual waste management plan to the City and post clear signs on every collection bin. You are required to educate tenants about proper sorting at least twice a year.

Commercial and industrial properties

Businesses must separate recyclables and food waste from general garbage. You must provide clearly labeled collection containers and train your staff or tenants on sorting rules every year. If you produce large amounts of construction waste or special materials, you must follow the drop-off rules at the landfill.

How to follow the bylaw

Sorting your waste correctly is the easiest way to comply. Use the Waste wizard and disposal guide to check if an item belongs in your blue bin, green bin, or black cart. Keep your carts clean and in good condition. Place carts at the curb no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the night before and no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day. Leave one metre of space between carts and vehicles so trucks can collect them safely.

Fees and penalties

Waste collection is bundled into your utility bill. Residential customers pay a monthly service fee of $45.00. Commercial properties pay a base rate starting at $150.00 per month, depending on bin size and service frequency. The City charges extra fees for missed collections due to contamination, for requesting additional carts, and for after-hours utility repairs.

Violating the bylaw can lead to fines. Illegal dumping carries penalties of up to $500 for individuals and up to $20,000 for businesses. Repeated failures to sort waste or provide required services for multi-unit buildings may result in enforcement action, including daily fines and service suspension.
