What the by-law covers
The Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075 sets the rules for parking on city streets and in city lots. These rules keep traffic moving, protect pedestrians, and make sure snow can be cleared in winter. You must follow them at all times. The by-law covers parking permits, bus-only lanes, winter parking bans, and parking tickets.
Parking permits
If you live or work in a restricted zone, you may need a permit. Permits are digital and printed by you. There is no need to wait for a physical sticker in the mail.
- Residential parking permit: $75.00 a year. Required for homes in restricted zones.
- Visitor parking permit: $25.00 a year. You can get up to two for your home to park guests.
- Accessible parking permit: $25.00 a year. For residents who hold a valid provincial accessibility parking permit.
- Student parking permit: $50.00 a year. For full-time students at local schools or colleges.
Apply online or at City Hall. For businesses that need to park commercial vehicles, see the Commercial parking permits page.
Bus-only lanes and transit rules
Wrenford Transit gets priority on key downtown and north-side corridors. Bus-only lanes are active from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. These lanes run along Tamsin Street, Benchlands Drive, and Northgate Boulevard.
Stopping in a bus lane is only allowed for a two-minute passenger drop-off, and only when it is safe and does not block traffic. If you park or drive in a bus lane during active hours, you will receive a $155.00 fine under the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075. For more details, see the Bus-only lanes and curbside regulations page.
Winter parking bans
During the winter, the city needs clear roads to plow snow. From December 1 to March 31, a parking ban is in effect on all snow routes every night from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. You must move your vehicle before the ban starts, or it will be ticketed and towed. If you have a medical condition that makes moving your car difficult, you can apply for an exemption. Learn how to apply on the Snow route parking bans page.
Parking tickets and fines
By-law enforcement officers issue parking tickets for violations like expired meters, blocking driveways, or parking during a snow ban. You have 15 days to pay a parking ticket at the discounted rate. After 30 days, a $25.00 collection fee is added. If you do not pay within 60 days, a 50% late fee is added to the original fine.
If you believe the ticket was issued in error, you can dispute it at the Provincial Offences Court. Court hearings for parking disputes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. For step-by-step instructions on how to pay or fight a ticket, visit the Pay or dispute a parking ticket page. If you need to appeal a decision, see the Parking enforcement appeals page.
