When the parking ban is in effect

Every winter, the City of Wrenford asks residents and visitors to move their vehicles from the street at night so our snow removal crews can work safely and efficiently. The overnight on-street parking ban runs from December 1 to March 31 each year. During these months, you cannot park on any municipal street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Why we need the ban

Snow removal is a city-wide operation. Our crews need clear lanes to drive through every neighbourhood to plow and treat the roads. If cars are parked on the street overnight, plows cannot pass, and streets stay covered in snow longer. Moving your car helps us clear your street faster and keep main roads open for transit and emergency vehicles. Under the Municipal Act, 2001, the City has the authority to set these rules to keep our roads safe.

How the ban works

The ban covers all municipal streets, including residential roads, collector roads, and main arterials. It is enforced overnight to give you all day to use your car and move it before 2:00 a.m.

  • Main roads and collectors: These are the first streets cleared each night. They are plowed down to the pavement and treated with salt and sand.
  • Residential streets: These streets are cleared after the main roads. Plows push snow to the sides of the road, leaving windrows (piles of snow). You can still park on these streets once the snow is piled, as long as you leave enough space for driveways and fire hydrants.

What you need to do

Make it a habit to park in a driveway, garage, or private lot before 2:00 a.m. If you do not have off-street parking, you must find a legal spot on a different route or use a paid parking lot. Do not park in front of hydrants, bus stops, or crosswalks.

If you have a medical condition or a temporary situation that makes moving your car impossible, you can apply for a parking ban exemption. You must submit your application to the City before the ban starts, or as soon as your situation changes.

Enforcement and towing

The overnight parking ban is enforced under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097. If your vehicle is parked on a street during the ban hours, it can be towed at the owner's expense. The Wrenford Police Service works with towing companies to clear streets quickly. You may also receive a parking ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.

If your car is towed, you can contact the Wrenford Police Service Headquarters at 519-555-0117 to find out where your vehicle was moved. Always check the tow truck operator's ticket for the impound lot location and hours.
