What are bus-only lanes?
Bus-only lanes keep Wrenford Transit moving smoothly through busy traffic. They are reserved for buses, bicycles, taxis, and emergency vehicles during set hours. Keeping these lanes clear helps your bus arrive on time and reduces congestion for everyone on the road.
Where are the lanes on our streets?
Wrenford Transit operates on routes 1 to 14. Bus-only lanes are currently in place on the following corridors:
- Tamsin Street (downtown core, between Mercer Street and Water Street)
- Benchlands Drive (between Mill Street and the Centennial Bridge)
- Northgate Boulevard (between Eastfield Road and Corvid Way)
When do the lanes apply?
Bus-only lanes are active Monday to Friday during morning and afternoon peak periods:
- Morning peak: 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Afternoon peak: 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During off-peak hours and weekends, these lanes become general traffic lanes unless otherwise signed.
Who can use a bus-only lane?
Only the following vehicles may drive in a bus-only lane during active hours:
- Wrenford Transit buses and Wrenford Access vehicles
- Bicycles
- Licensed taxis and ride-hailing vehicles (when picking up or dropping off passengers)
- Emergency vehicles (police, fire, paramedic)
- Vehicles turning right into a driveway or side street (you may cross the lane to turn, but you cannot travel through it continuously)
Curbside parking and loading rules
During active bus lane hours, the curb lane is a bus lane, not a parking lane. Please follow these rules:
- No parking or loading is allowed in the bus lane.
- Look for "Bus Lane" signs and curb paint to identify the zone.
- Passenger drop-off is allowed for up to two minutes only if it is safe to do so without blocking the lane.
- Commercial loading zones are marked with white paint and specific time limits.
Enforcement
The Wrenford Police Service enforces bus lane and curbside regulations. Officers patrol the corridors daily. Parking a vehicle in a bus-only lane during active hours can result in a ticket under the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075. You can report issues or ask questions through Service Wrenford 311.
