About the programme
Everyone deserves a chance to enjoy the water. The Swim abilities programme offers adapted swimming lessons designed for individuals with physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where you can build water confidence and learn essential aquatic skills at your own pace.
Our qualified instructors work closely with each participant to meet their unique needs. Lessons focus on three core areas: water comfort, buoyancy, and propulsion. Whether you are a beginner looking to get used to the pool or an experienced swimmer wanting to refine your technique, our programme is tailored for you.
Programme options
- 1-on-1 Adapted Lessons: A private session where an instructor focuses entirely on your personal goals and learning style.
- Small Group Lessons: A supportive group setting with a low instructor-to-participant ratio. This option is great for building social connections while learning.
Support persons and aides
You are welcome and encouraged to bring a support person, aide, or family member to the pool. For certain skill levels, a support person is required to be in the water with you to assist with safety and transfers. Staff will not provide one-on-one physical assistance, lifting, or transferring. If you need help with these tasks, please bring your own aide.
Accessible facilities
Our aquatic centres are equipped with features to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Both the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre and the Northgate Aquatic Centre offer accessible change rooms, pool lifts, and zero-depth entries where applicable. Please review our full list of features on the Accessibility features at facilities page.
