What is social isolation?
Social isolation happens when you have few social contacts and not many people to interact with regularly. Older adults face a higher risk because of changes in health, hearing, vision, mobility, or the loss of family and friends. Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, which can happen even in a crowd. While social isolation is about the lack of connections, loneliness is the feeling that comes with it. Both can lead to poor physical and mental health, including higher blood pressure, heart disease, depression, and anxiety.
Who is at risk?
Many factors can increase the risk of social isolation for older adults. You may be at higher risk if you:
- Live alone
- Are 80 or older
- Have chronic health problems or mobility challenges
- Lack access to transportation
- Have a low income
- Are caring for a spouse or family member
- Recently experienced a major life change, such as retirement or the loss of a driver’s licence
- Live in a rural area or on a fixed route without easy transit access
How can you protect yourself and others?
Social connections are essential for a healthy life. You can protect yourself and your neighbours by staying aware of the signs. If someone you know is withdrawing, skipping meals, or neglecting their home, they may need support. Reaching out, checking in by phone, or inviting them to a local group can make a big difference.
