Where to find classes
Most adult fitness classes are held at Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre and Northgate Aquatic Centre, with some sessions also available at Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre and Westbrook Community Arena. Check the program schedule for the location and day of the week that works best for your routine. All facilities feature accessible washrooms, change rooms, and seating areas.
Types of adult fitness classes
- Water fitness: A full-body workout performed in shallow or deep water. The water's natural resistance builds muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while being gentle on your joints. Great for recovery and joint care.
- Chair yoga: Stretch, strengthen, and improve your posture through safe, seated, and standing poses. All equipment is provided. Ideal for improving flexibility and balance.
- Balanced strength: Focuses on core stability, leg strength, and fall prevention. Classes mix seated exercises with standing balance work to help you maintain independence in daily tasks.
- Indoor walking and light weights: A steady-paced class that combines walking circuits with light resistance training. You will improve your stamina and overall muscle tone.
Registration and fees
You can register for classes online, by phone, or in person at any recreation facility counter. Registration opens on the first Monday of December for winter sessions, and on the last Monday of August for fall sessions. A Silver Strength program is available on a drop-in basis, but most scheduled classes require advance registration.
The standard fee for adult fitness classes is $12.00 per session. If you are on a fixed income or receive social assistance, you may qualify for the Seniors Activity Fee Assistance program, which covers or reduces your daily fee. You can also bring an attendant to any class at no extra cost through our Attendant Admission Program.
Please note that registration closes ten business days before the session start date. After that, you may still join if space is available, but you will not be able to register online and must pay at the facility.
What to bring and wear
For studio classes, wear clean indoor athletic shoes and comfortable exercise clothing. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. For water fitness classes, bring a swimsuit and a towel. If you have any medical conditions or injuries, let the instructor know before the class begins so they can offer modifications.
