Ontario Works housing support

Find out how Ontario Works helps you cover rent, emergency shelter, and housing permits in Wrenford.

Shelter allowance

If you receive Ontario Works, you may be eligible for a monthly shelter allowance based on your family size. The allowance is designed to help cover rent, heating, and electricity. Rates are set by the province and adjusted annually. Your case worker will review your actual rent and utility costs. If your costs are lower than the rate, you will receive the amount you actually pay. If your costs exceed the rate, you may still receive the capped rate unless you qualify for a special exception.

Family size Monthly shelter rate
1 person $510.00
2 persons $640.00
3 persons $780.00
4 persons $910.00
5 or more persons $1,040.00

Emergency shelter assistance

If you are facing an immediate threat of eviction or need temporary shelter, Ontario Works can provide emergency financial assistance for rent or a hotel stay. This is a one-time payment to bridge a gap while your regular shelter allowance is processed. Applications are reviewed within one business day, and payments are made directly to landlords or hotels when possible. For shelter emergencies between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 a.m., call 519-555-0111 to reach an on-call case worker.

Housing permits and rental listings

Ontario Works clients are encouraged to use the Wrenford Housing Registry to find affordable units. You must have a valid rental housing permit to receive housing support payments for a private rental unit. The permit ensures the property meets basic safety and health standards.

Applying for housing support

Your Ontario Works case worker will help you complete the housing portion of your application during your initial intake meeting. You will need to provide a signed lease agreement, proof of utility accounts in your name, and a copy of your rental housing permit. Need a lease? A Community Navigator can help you speak with landlords and explain your eligibility to potential rental properties. They can also assist with completing the necessary paperwork for your Ontario Works application. If your housing situation changes, you must report it within five business days. Visit Reporting changes to your circumstances for more information.
