Ontario Works reporting changes

Learn what changes you must report for Ontario Works, how to report them, and the deadlines to avoid payment issues.

What you need to report

Ontario Works is a provincial program that helps with basic needs. You must tell the City when your situation changes. Reporting changes keeps your benefits accurate and ensures you get the right amount of support. It also helps us update your file so you do not miss out on services you may qualify for.

You must report any of the following changes:

  • Changes in your income, including paycheques, pensions, child support, or employment insurance
  • Changes in your household size, such as a new partner, child, or family member moving in or out
  • Changes in your address or mailing address
  • Changes in your employment status, including starting, stopping, or changing a job
  • Changes in your education or training program
  • Changes in your medical or dental coverage
  • Changes in your banking information for direct deposit

How to report a change

You can report changes in several ways. Choose the method that works best for you. Please bring a government-issued photo ID and any supporting documents, such as a pay stub or lease agreement, to verify your update.

  • In person: Visit the Service Wrenford counter at City Hall, 100 Mercer Street. Staff can help you fill out the required forms and answer questions on the spot.
  • By mail or drop-off: Send a completed Ontario Works Change of Circumstances form to the Ontario Works office at 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1.
  • Online: Log in to the Ontario Works online portal using your client number to upload documents and update your details securely.
  • By phone: Call 519-555-0100 and ask for an Ontario Works case worker. They can guide you through the reporting process or mail you a form.

When to report

You must report all changes within 30 days of the change occurring. For changes that affect your monthly payment amount, such as a new job or a change in income, you must report them within 10 business days. Timely reporting helps avoid overpayments or underpayments. If you are unsure whether a change needs to be reported, please contact your case worker to ask before the deadline passes.

What happens if you do not report

Failing to report changes can result in an overpayment of benefits. The City may require you to pay back money you received in error. In serious cases, not reporting can affect your eligibility for future benefits or lead to further review of your file. If you make a mistake on your application or report, you can still correct it by contacting your case worker as soon as you notice the error.
