Ontario Works child support enforcement

Find out how the City of Wrenford handles child support obligations for Ontario Works recipients and what you need to do to stay eligible.

Why child support matters for Ontario Works

If you get Ontario Works, the province expects you to use your child support money to help pay for your child. The City of Wrenford helps collect this money as part of your case. The goal is to make sure your child gets the support they need, and that your case stays accurate.

How the process works

When you apply, you will need to tell us about the other parent of your child. We will ask that parent to pay child support. The money they pay goes straight to you. It does not go to the City or the province.

We usually start asking for support within a few weeks of your first payment. Once the other parent starts paying, your monthly benefit will be adjusted to reflect that support.

What you must do

To keep getting Ontario Works, you must do a few things:

  • Give us the name, address, and phone number of the other parent.
  • Help us find them if they move or change their phone number.
  • Go to your appointments with our case worker and the child support team.
  • Report any changes in your situation right away, such as a new address, a new relationship, or a change in the other parent's income. Follow our reporting rules to stay eligible.

If you do not cooperate, we may have to reduce or stop your Ontario Works support. This is a provincial rule, not a City choice.

What happens if you disagree with the amount

Sometimes the amount of child support we ask for does not match what the other parent can actually pay. If you think the amount is wrong, tell your case worker right away. You can also ask for a review of the decision. See the appeals process for full steps.

You must ask for a City review within 30 calendar days of receiving your decision letter. The City will look at your case again and send you a written answer within 20 business days. If you still disagree, you can take the case to the Social Benefits Tribunal within 30 days of our letter.
