Learn how to request an internal review of an Ontario Works decision or appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal.

Ask for an internal review

If you disagree with a decision about your Ontario Works support, you can ask the City to review it. This is called an internal review. You must request a review within 30 calendar days of the date on the decision letter.

To start a review, send a letter or email to [email protected] or visit the Service Wrenford counter at Wrenford City Hall. Include:

  • Your name and client number
  • The date of the decision you are challenging
  • A clear explanation of why you disagree
  • Any new information or documents that support your case

A case manager who did not make the original decision will review your file. You will receive a written response within 20 business days. The review will confirm, change, or cancel the original decision.

Appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal

If you still disagree after the City's internal review, you can appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal (SBT). The SBT is an independent provincial body that makes final decisions on Ontario Works disputes. The City cannot change its decision until the SBT makes a ruling.

You must file your appeal with the SBT within 30 calendar days of receiving the City's review letter. You can file online at the SBT website or by mailing the completed forms to the SBT office. There is no fee to file an appeal.

Once you file, the SBT will send you a hearing notice. You can attend the hearing by phone, video, or in person. You may bring a friend, family member, or legal advisor to help you present your case.
