Common waste queries

Answers to common questions about garbage, recycling, organics, and special waste collection in Wrenford.

How does curbside collection work?

Wrenford operates on a weekly and biweekly schedule for waste collection. You are charged a flat monthly fee of $45.00 covering garbage, recycling, and organics services, which is billed via your water and sewer account. Payment is not based on weight.

  • Garbage (Black cart): Biweekly collection. Place your cart at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. Do not place it before 7:00 p.m. the evening before.
  • Recycling (Blue bin): Weekly collection. Keep your bin clear of leaves, snow, and other debris.
  • Organics (Green bin): Weekly collection. Place it out with the black cart on biweekly collection days.

If you have extra garbage beyond your cart's capacity, you may use paper or certified plastic bags. Each bag must weigh no more than 10 kg. Do not tie bags closed; leave them open so collectors can see the contents. You may set out up to three extra bags per collection day.

What goes in each bin?

The Waste Wizard online tool is the best way to check if an item belongs in your black cart, blue bin, or green bin. When in doubt, throw it out or take it to a drop-off depot to keep your recycling and organics clean.

Green bin (Organics)

Place food scraps, yard trimmings, and soiled paper products here. Do not put black garbage bags, hard plastics, or liquids in the green bin. Contaminated loads are sent to the landfill, which defeats our waste diversion goals.

Blue bin (Recycling)

Acceptable items include cardboard (flattened, boxes under 60 cm by 90 cm), paper, glass, metal, and hard plastics. Remove lids from plastic bottles. Do not include plastic bags, styrofoam, or electronics in the blue bin.

Black cart (Garbage)

Everything else that does not fit in the other two categories goes here. This includes non-recyclable plastics, broken glass, and small items that cannot be sorted safely.

How is contamination handled?

Staff may inspect your green bin at the curb to check for contamination. If you put the wrong items in the green bin, a by-law officer may issue a warning or fine. Using the Wrenford Waste Watch text-alert programme will keep you updated on collection changes and sorting tips.

Yard waste and Christmas trees

From April through the end of November, you can set out paper yard-waste bags biweekly on your garbage collection day. Keep bags rolled closed and placed 0.5 metres away from your black cart.

After the holidays, place your Christmas tree out curbside for pickup during the first two weeks of January. We turn these trees into Wrenford Green Mulch for parks and community gardens.

Special waste and hazardous materials

Do not place hazardous materials, electronics, tires, or bulky items in your curbside carts. Instead, use our free or low-cost drop-off services:

  • Household hazardous waste: Paints, solvents, and batteries can be dropped off for free at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility on Saturdays from May to October.
  • Electronics and e-waste: Drop off at the Northgate Drop-off Depot or during seasonal collection events.
  • Needles and syringes: Use sealed sharps containers and drop them off at any fire hall or the East Wrenford facility year-round.
  • Construction waste and mattresses: Visit the East Wrenford facility. A $25.00 recycling fee applies per mattress.

Missing carts, missed collections, and by-laws

If your cart is missing, damaged, or you did not get a pickup, call 311 or 519-555-0100 before 4:00 p.m. on your collection day. Replacement carts take five to ten business days to arrive.

Leaving garbage on your property, overflowing bins, or illegal dumping violates our Clean Yards By-law 2019-113 and the Waste management bylaw and regulations. Fines for individuals can reach $500, while businesses may face fines up to $20,000. Report illegal dumping by calling 311 or submitting a complaint online.
