Social stories for recreation

Plain-language guides to help you or your child prepare for a recreation class, swim lesson, or drop-in session.

What is a social story?

A social story is a short, simple guide that helps you or your child get ready for a recreation class, swim lesson, or drop-in session. It breaks down what will happen, step by step, so you know what to expect. Many people find these stories helpful for reducing anxiety and building confidence before trying a new activity.

How to use a social story

You can read these guides at home before your first visit. Going through the story a few times can make the day of the class feel much calmer. You can print the guide out to take with you, or keep it on your phone to look at on the way to the facility.

What is included in a guide?

Each social story covers a few key areas:

  • What is happening: A brief look at the activity or skill you will learn.
  • Where it takes place: The name of the recreation centre, arena, or park, and where to go when you arrive.
  • Who will be there: Information about instructors, coaches, and other participants.
  • Steps for the day: A simple list of what to do first, like checking in at the front desk, storing your belongings, and joining the group.
  • Sensory expectations: A note about the noise level, lighting, and space. For example, some indoor pools echo, and arenas can feel crowded.
  • Safety rules: Clear instructions on staying with your group, listening to leaders, and using safe movements.
  • Feelings and coping strategies: Tips for handling nervousness or excitement, such as asking for a break or taking deep breaths.

Requesting a custom social story

If you need a social story for a specific program or have unique accessibility needs, our Recreation Programs team can create a custom guide for you. Just send an email to [email protected] with the name of the program and any details that will help us tailor the story. We will prepare it and send it back to you before your first session.

Additional support

We want everyone to feel welcome in our recreation spaces. If you need extra help on the day of your class, please ask to speak with a staff member at the front desk. You can also look at our Inclusive and adapted programs page for more information on how we support all participants.
