Programme overview

Get on the ice and build confidence with our seasonal learn-to-skate classes. Designed for beginners and those looking to improve their basic skills, these six-week courses run at Westbrook Community Arena and Eastfield Twin Arenas. You will learn balance, stopping, gliding, and turning in a safe, supervised environment.

Registration dates and how to register

Winter programme registration opens on the first Monday of December. You can register online through Wrenford Recreation Online or by phone at the Downtown Transit Terminal customer service desk. Spots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend registering early. You will receive a confirmation email with your exact time slot and coach assignment.

Session details and age groups

  • Learn to Skate 1 (Ages 3–5): Focus on balance, basic gliding, and getting comfortable on the ice.
  • Learn to Skate 2 (Ages 6–12): Introduces stroking, turning, and controlled stopping.
  • Learn to Skate 3 (Ages 13+): Builds on fundamentals with improved speed and edge control.

What to bring and arrive early

Arrive ten minutes before your first class so we can check you in and help you get fitted. Wear warm, layered clothing that allows movement. Avoid long scarves or loose strings that could catch on blades. Skates, helmets, and gloves are required for every session. If you do not own a pair of ice skates, you can rent them at the arena skate shop before class begins. For more information on equipment care and rental options, visit skate rental and care.

Safety rules and rink expectations

On the ice, your safety and the safety of others come first. All participants must wear a CSA-approved helmet and fasten it securely. Helmets and gloves are mandatory throughout the lesson. You will start in the lobby near the welcome desk, where your instructor will take attendance and guide you onto the ice. Once on the ice, stay within your designated learning zone and follow the coach’s directions. Parents and guardians are welcome to watch from the seating area but must remain in the spectator zone during active skating.

Fees and financial assistance

The fee for a six-week course is $35.00. Payment is due at registration. If you are a Wrenford resident and need financial assistance, please visit Recreation fee assistance to see if you qualify for a discount or subsidy. We want to make sure every resident can enjoy the ice.

Accessibility and support

Our programmes are open to all abilities. We offer adapted sessions and trained support staff upon request. If you or your child would benefit from a social story to prepare for the first lesson, or if you need an accommodation, contact Caroline Dubé, our Recreation Programs Coordinator, at inclusive programming.
