What are adapted and supported fitness classes?
Adapted and supported fitness classes are low-to-moderate intensity programs designed for participants who need a modified routine. These classes focus on building strength, improving balance, and supporting overall wellness in a safe and inclusive environment. Whether you have a physical, cognitive, or developmental disability, our instructors will work with you to reach your personal fitness goals.
Benefits of adapted fitness
Regular participation in adapted fitness can help you:
- Improve circulation and cardiovascular health
- Increase bone density and overall muscle strength
- Enhance balance and coordination
- Manage pain and reduce stress
- Build confidence and connect with peers
Class options
We offer two main types of adapted programs at our recreation centres. All classes are held in accessible studios or weight rooms equipped with adaptive machines.
Adapted Weight Room
A supervised program where you follow a personalized workout plan tailored to your abilities and goals. Instructors provide one-on-one guidance and modifications as needed.
- Adults (18+): Focus on mobility, strength maintenance, and functional fitness.
- Youth and Teens (10+): Kid-friendly exercises that build confidence and support motor skill development.
Prerequisite: New participants must complete a ParMed-X or ParQ+ health screening form before their first class. Returning participants must submit a new form every 12 months.
Supported Studio Fitness
A group-based class held in a low-stimulus environment. Participants follow along with modified movements while receiving direct support from an instructor and a designated aide if needed. Aides are welcome and encouraged to assist.
