Why plant trees in Wrenford?
Trees clean our air, cool our streets, and give wildlife a place to live. Our city is working to reach a sixteen per cent tree canopy cover. We want every neighbourhood to enjoy the shade and clean air that big trees bring. When you plant a tree on your property or in a public space, you help Wrenford stay cool in the summer and absorb heavy rain in the spring.

Plant a tree on your property
The Canopy for Wrenford program gives residents free trees and planting guides for their yards. We focus on areas that need more shade and cooler streets. You can pick up a free tree at any recreation centre or the Civic Operations Centre during business hours. We also offer a planting workshop so you know exactly how to dig, water, and mulch your new tree. Follow the simple steps in our guide, and your tree will grow strong for decades.
School and volunteer planting days
Want to work outside with your class or group? We host spring planting days across the city. Spring planting days run from April 15 to May 31. Students and volunteers plant trees in parks, along trails, and on public right-of-ways. You will get gloves, tools, and a certified arborist to walk you through the process. Spaces fill up quickly, so book your spot early through our online calendar or by calling the Parks team.
Memorial tree planting
Plant a living tribute in your favourite park or along the Tamsin River Trail. Explore more trails near your home. A memorial tree adds beauty and habitat for local wildlife. You can choose from a list of native species that thrive in Wrenford's soil. The City plants and maintains the tree for five years after planting. A small bronze plaque marks the spot.
Rules and permits
Before you plant, check if your property is protected by the Tree Protection By-law 2018-045. If you need to remove a tree to make room, you must apply for a permit first. You can apply here online. Keep trees at least one metre away from utility lines and property fences. We provide a full species list and spacing guide when you register.
