Do you need a permit?

Removing a tree from your property can help with safety, construction, or landscaping. In Wrenford, you must apply for a permit to remove certain trees. This protects our urban canopy and keeps the city beautiful.

You must apply if your tree meets any of these conditions:

  • It is 15 centimetres or more in diameter, measured 1.4 metres above the ground.
  • It is part of a row or hedge with multiple stems, and the combined diameter of the largest two stems is 15 centimetres or more.
  • A development or building permit already requires its removal.
  • It is dead, dying, diseased, or poses a hazard to people or property.

Small trees that do not meet these size limits do not need a permit. You can check your property details or view the By-laws online for full details.

How to apply

Follow these steps to submit your application. The City uses a simple online portal, but you can also visit us in person.

Step 1: Prepare your documents

You will need to provide the following to show why the tree must go and how the site will look afterward:

  • A site plan showing existing buildings, streets, and all trees on the lot. Mark the tree you want to remove and the exact location for any replacement trees.
  • An arborist report from a certified arborist explaining the tree's condition and why removal is necessary.
  • A signed letter of authorization if you are applying on behalf of the property owner.
  • Written consent from the other owner if the tree sits on a shared property line.

Step 2: Submit your application and pay

Submit your completed application through the City's online portal or at the Service Wrenford counter. You must pay the application fee when you submit.

  • Fee for the first tree: $150.00
  • Fee for each additional tree in the same calendar year: $45.00

Step 3: City review

Planning staff will review your documents. They may visit your property to check the site conditions and confirm the arborist report. You will receive a decision by email or mail within two weeks.

After approval

If your permit is approved, you have six months to remove the tree. You must post a copy of the permit where it is visible from the street while work is happening.

If the removed tree was larger than 15 centimetres in diameter, you must plant a replacement tree on your property. A city inspector will visit to make sure the new tree is healthy and meets size requirements. You can find nearby Parks & Trails or Planning and Development for advice on native species.
