When and where you can park overnight

You can leave your vehicle in city parks overnight from May 1 to October 31. Overnight parking is not allowed from December 1 to March 31. This period is reserved for snow clearing and winter maintenance on park roads and parking lots.

Overnight parking is allowed in the following parks:

  • Riverside Flats Park
  • Ambrel Lake Park
  • Benchlands Lookout Park
  • Hollis Park Off-Leash Area

You must park in a designated parking lot. Do not block trails, bike paths, or emergency access routes. Parking is only permitted between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Rules for overnight parking

City parks are open spaces, not campgrounds. While your vehicle can stay overnight, the following rules apply:

  • Stay for a maximum of three consecutive nights. After that, you must move your vehicle to a different location or obtain a special permit.
  • No camping equipment is allowed. This includes tents, campers, or any structures that extend beyond your vehicle.
  • You cannot set up grills, fire pits, or open flames. Use the park barbecue sites for cooking instead.
  • Keep noise levels low between 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to respect other visitors.
  • Leave the area clean. Take all trash and recycling with you or use the bins in the parking lot.

Fees and permits

Overnight parking in designated park lots is free for up to three nights. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a Park Overnight Parking Permit through the Planning & Development office. A $25.00 application fee applies. Permits are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure safety and minimal impact on park users.

What happens if you break the rules

By-law officers patrol city parks regularly. If you park overnight without following these rules, you may receive a ticket under Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075. Repeated violations can lead to higher fines or towing at your expense. If you are having a personal crisis or need housing support, please contact the Community team. We can connect you with local resources.
