Keep parks smoke-free
You can enjoy our parks, trails and facilities without second-hand smoke. The Smoking Regulation By-law 2017-098 bans smoking, vaping and the use of e-cigarettes in all City parks and park areas. This rule applies to residents and visitors alike. We want every green space in Wrenford to be a safe place for families, pets and wildlife.
Where the ban applies
The smoking ban covers every park space under City control, including:
- Sports fields, ball diamonds, courts and playgrounds
- All pathways and trails, including the Tamsin River Trail System
- Outdoor pools, splash pads and rinks
- Park buildings, shelters and customer service areas
- Parking lots within park boundaries
- Public golf courses and their clubhouses or patios
- Vehicles for hire and public transit operating in parks
- Within 6.0 metres of any entrance or exit to a park building
You must step outside these boundaries to smoke or vape. If you are driving in your own car or waiting for a ride, you can still smoke as long as you are not within the six-metre zone of a building door or window.
Why the rule exists
Cigarette litter is a major problem in public parks. It harms wildlife, pollutes our waterways and can start dangerous fires, especially during dry spells. The by-law helps keep our trails clean, protects children and seniors from second-hand smoke and supports our community wellness goals. It also reduces the risk of accidental fires in our natural areas.
How the rule is enforced
Our main goal is voluntary compliance through education. If you see someone smoking in a park, you can politely let them know that a City by-law prohibits it. If the behaviour continues, By-law Enforcement officers can issue tickets. The specified penalty for smoking in a regulated outdoor space is $200.00.
