Book a free home inspection

If you are a senior aged sixty-five or older, or you receive a provincial income assistance benefit, you can book a free home visit through the Wrenford Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Inspection Program. A Fire Prevention Officer will come to your house to check every alarm, replace dead batteries, and install new units if yours are missing or expired.

Residents with hearing loss can also request the Free Assistive Alerting Device Programme. These devices use flashing lights and vibrating pads to alert you to an alarm sound.

To book a free visit, call Fire Station 1 at 519-555-0115. Inspections run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

How to install and maintain your alarms

The Ontario Building Code requires every dwelling unit to have single-detected smoke alarms on every storey and inside each sleeping area. You must also have a carbon monoxide alarm if your home has fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage. Follow these steps to keep your home safe:

  • Mount smoke alarms high on the wall or in the centre of the ceiling.
  • Place carbon monoxide alarms at breathing height, about one and a half metres off the ground.
  • Install one alarm inside every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.
  • Test your alarms every month by pressing the test button.
  • Replace the batteries at least once a year, or as soon as the unit chirps.
  • Replace the entire alarm every ten years, or sooner if the manufacturer advises.
  • Never disconnect an alarm or cover it with paint.

If you need help installing hard-wired or interconnected alarms, contact our team. We can provide step-by-step guides or refer you to a licensed electrician.

Fees and rules

If you do not qualify for the free programme, a standard inspection costs $25.00. Payment is accepted at the time of service by cash or debit. The fee covers the officer's visit, a full system check, and any necessary battery replacements.

If an alarm sounds falsely or fails to activate during a test, you must report it. Our officers will come to your address to troubleshoot the problem and ensure your home meets safety standards. Ignoring a faulty alarm can result in a compliance order under local by-laws.
