How you will be notified
We use several channels to warn residents about evacuations. You will receive messages through the Wrenford Emergency Alert Network on your phone or landline. Local radio and television broadcasts also carry updates. The City posts official information on social media and may deploy police or fire crews with loudspeakers to affected streets. In some neighbourhoods, emergency workers will visit doors directly.
Always Sign up for emergency alerts so you receive warnings immediately.
Evacuation stages
The City uses three stages to manage evacuations:
- Evacuation alert: An imminent threat is developing. Prepare your household and gather your emergency supplies.
- Evacuation order: You must leave the affected area right away. Returning is not allowed until officials say it is safe.
- Evacuation rescind: The threat has passed and the area is safe. You may be allowed to return home.
What to do during an evacuation
If you receive an evacuation order, follow these steps:
- Stay calm and gather your family and pets.
- Grab your Build an emergency kit and essential medications.
- Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
- Turn off lights and unplug appliances. Leave the water on, but shut off the gas if instructed to do so.
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Leave a note on your door or in your mailbox with your destination and the time you left.
- Follow designated routes. Do not take shortcuts through closed roads or flooded areas.
- Register at a reception centre if directed. This helps us locate you and reunite your family.
Where to go
The City does not publicly list fixed evacuation destinations before an event. During an emergency, officials will direct you to a reception centre. Potential sites include community arenas and recreation centres, such as the Westbrook Community Arena or the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre, depending on the hazard and affected area. Staff at these sites will provide food, water, registration, and family reunification services.
If you cannot drive, contact Wrenford Transit or Wrenford Access for specialized transportation. Call 311 inside the city limits or 519-555-0100 from outside the city to request a ride if you have a pre-booked service.
Special needs and accessibility
We want everyone to have a safe way out. If you rely on mobility aids, medical equipment, or have hearing or vision loss, tell your neighbours and building management your needs in advance.
- Keep extra batteries, hearing aids, and spare glasses in your kit.
- Use visual alerts on your phone and register for Text with 9-1-1 if you are deaf or hard of hearing.
- If you use a wheelchair, ensure it can be transported and keep a manual backup chair if possible.
- Older adults should keep a list of medications and doctor contacts in their kit.
- Families with young children should pack formula, diapers, and comfort items.
- Pets must leave with you. Bring a secure carrier, leash, and food. Service dogs need their vaccination records.
Returning home
Do not drive back until the evacuation order is rescinded. Roads may be blocked, washed out, or unsafe. Wait for the all-clear from emergency crews. If your home is damaged, contact the City's Cleaning up and repairing after emergency for guidance on restoring utilities and clearing debris.
