Why you might cancel a permit

You may need to cancel a building permit if your project is delayed, the plans changed, or you no longer plan to build. The City may also ask you to cancel a permit if the approved plans do not meet the Ontario Building Code or if the work falls outside the zoning by-law. In those cases, you must stop all construction immediately and contact the department to arrange the cancellation. Continuing work on an expired or cancelled permit can lead to stop-work orders and fines under the Municipal Act, 2001.

How to request a cancellation

Submit a written request to the Planning and Development department. You can email [email protected] or visit Wrenford City Hall at 100 Mercer Street. Include your permit number, the property address, and a brief note explaining why you want to cancel. A planner will review the file, check for any open inspection requests, and issue a cancellation notice within five business days. Keep a copy of the notice for your records.

Fees and refunds

There is a $85.00 administrative fee to process a cancellation request. The City keeps the fee to cover the staff time spent reviewing the original application. If your permit was issued less than 30 days ago and no inspections have been booked, you may be eligible for a partial refund of the original permit fee. Refunds over 50% of the original fee require approval from the City Manager. All financial decisions follow the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151.

When permits expire

A building permit is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued. If you do not start construction within that time, the permit expires and becomes void. You will need to submit a new application and pay the fees again. If you need more time, you can apply for an extension before the 12-month deadline. You cannot renew a void permit; a fresh application is required.
