Why you need an extension

Building permits in Wrenford have strict timelines. If you cannot complete the required inspections or finish construction on schedule, you will need to extend your permit. Without an extension, your permit may expire, and you could face reinstatement fees or have to reapply.

How inspections reset the clock

When you book a building inspection and it is completed, the timeline for your next required inspection resets for another 180 days. You must request a new inspection within that period. If you are not ready for the next inspection, you can apply for an extension before the current one expires. This rule also applies to trade permits, which reset for 365 days after a successful inspection.

How to request an extension before it expires

If your permit is still active, you can extend it to give yourself more time. Email your request to [email protected]. Include the following in your message:

  • Your contact information
  • Permit number
  • Project address
  • Reason for the extension

Once we review your request, we will issue an invoice for the extension fee. Your permit will be extended once payment is received.

Reinstating an expired permit

If your permit expires, you still have a short window to reinstate it. You must submit your reinstatement request within 30 days of the expiration date. After 30 days, the permit is considered void, and you will need to submit a brand new application with full fees. This applies to building permits, trade permits, and development permits.

Email [email protected] with your contact information, permit number, and project address. We will review your request and provide instructions for the reinstatement fee.

Extension and reinstatement fees

Fee amounts are based on a percentage of your original permit fee, as set out in the Fees and Charges By-law.

  • Extension fee: 10 per cent of the original permit fee.
  • Reinstatement fee: 50 per cent of the original permit fee.

Development permits can also have their commencement date extended up to 90 days before the original date. You may apply for this extension up to two times, provided the change of use or intensity has not changed.
