The City of Wrenford is opening a temporary warming centre at Westbrook Community Arena starting tonight, Tuesday, January 20, in response to the extreme cold snap forecast for the region. The centre will provide a safe, heated space for anyone in need who is experiencing hardship during the freezing temperatures.
The arena will operate from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. daily until the cold weather warning ends. Volunteers and staff will be on site to offer hot drinks, light snacks, and blankets. The space is open to all residents and visitors seeking relief from the cold. No registration or identification is required to enter.
"We know these cold snaps can be dangerous for our neighbours, and we want to make sure everyone has access to a warm place to stay," says Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "If you or someone you know is struggling to stay warm, please come to Westbrook or call 311 for other options."
Residents should check Warming centres and Emergency shelters and support for a full list of all open locations, including night shelters and daytime drop-in spaces. If you cannot make it to a centre, call 311 or 519-555-0100 for assistance.
While the cold lasts, please check on elderly neighbours and those with health conditions. You can help by sharing this alert and keeping your sidewalks clear for emergency crews. Make sure you have received critical weather warnings by signing up for emergency alerts on your phone. For more tips on how to prepare for extreme cold, visit Extreme weather and storm preparedness.
