Where to go when it is cold outside
During periods of extreme cold, snow or ice, the City of Wrenford opens additional indoor spaces for people who need to stay warm. Warming centres and emergency shelters are located at our recreation and community centres, as well as the public library branches. You can also visit any civic building during open hours.
How to find a centre
Check the Service Alerts page for the latest list of open locations and hours. You can also call 311 inside the city, 519-555-0140 for the Winter Shelter Access line, or 519-555-0100 from outside the city. If you see someone in serious distress or who is not responding, call 911 right away.
What to bring and what is provided
Centres provide a warm, safe place to sit and rest. The City works with local service providers to offer hot drinks and light snacks. If you need medical care, call 911 or contact Tamsin Valley Public Health for advice.
Outreach teams from the Community department and local partners visit encampments and streets to share information about open centres. They carry a list of shelter locations and can help connect you with housing and health supports. Email [email protected] to arrange a visit or report a need.
Storing your belongings
If you are staying outdoors and must move your belongings to comply with park rules, City staff will try to keep your items safe. We store essential items for up to 30 days. You can pick them up by calling 311. Items that are damaged, soiled, or unsafe will be disposed of. We also have a secure storage area at the Civic Operations Centre, 455 Railside Road, Wrenford, ON N4Q 3K7.
Park and street rules during cold weather
By-law officers and park staff focus on helping people stay safe and warm. We work with outreach teams to encourage people to come inside. During extreme cold, staff may pause some routine by-law enforcement to keep crews safe on the roads. We still need to keep sidewalks clear for snow removal and to make sure fire department connections are accessible.
Park rules still apply during the day. Temporary shelters must be removed at dawn so parks are available for everyone. Overnight, temporary shelters are allowed in parks from dusk to dawn.
Need help finding housing or support?
The City works with Ontario Works and housing partners to find long-term solutions. You can visit the Community department at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1, or call 519-555-0100 for referrals.
