The City of Wrenford is increasing emergency shelter capacity ahead of an extreme cold snap expected this week. Safe Nights Wrenford and community warming centres will open expanded hours and additional spaces starting tonight, Friday, February 20.
Safe Nights Wrenford normally holds 40 guests. To accommodate the forecast drop in temperature, the City will open an overflow wing at the Westbrook Community Arena, adding 20 more beds. The shelter operates 24 hours a day and provides daily meal service, secure intake screening, and a partner agency referral network. This network helps guests connect with longer-term housing and support services as soon as they arrive.
In addition to the overnight shelter, the City is opening warming centres at the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre and the Wrenford Public Library — Main Branch. These spaces are open for anyone seeking relief from the cold during the day and evening. Hot drinks and snacks will be available at both locations.
“We are activating our Winter Response for Unhoused Plan to ensure everyone has a safe place to stay when temperatures drop below freezing,” said City Manager Robert Eng. “Our partners and volunteers are working hard to keep our response coordinated and compassionate while we continue to focus on connecting people with housing.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, call the Coordinated Access Intake Line at 519-555-0140 for real-time capacity updates and referrals. The City’s Extreme Cold Outreach team is also on the streets to check on residents in encampments and on the roads. You can reach them at [email protected].
