The City of Wrenford is opening a temporary warming centre at Westbrook Community Arena starting this evening, December 10, as forecasted temperatures fall below -10°C. The space provides a safe, heated environment for residents experiencing homelessness or those without reliable heating.
The warming centre will operate from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. nightly until the cold weather alert is lifted. It is located at 40 Westbrook Drive in the Westbrook neighbourhood. Staff from community partner agencies will be on site to offer hot drinks, snacks, and referrals to longer-term housing and health services. Residents are asked to bring their own bedding if they have it, though mats will be provided.
"We are working with local service providers to ensure everyone who needs a warm place has access to one during this cold snap," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "If you see someone out in the cold, please call 9-1-1 or reach out to a partner agency."
The City activates warming centres when a cold weather alert is issued and wind chill or temperature readings drop below -10°C. During these alerts, the City also opens winter warming centres at other locations across the city. For a full list of locations, visit the warming centres page. If you need help finding a space, call 311 or 519-555-0100 from outside the city.
Residents experiencing homelessness are also encouraged to check out the emergency shelters and support page for information on year-round shelter options, pet-friendly zones, and low-barrier access. Seniors and residents with medical conditions who are at higher risk during extreme cold can find information on emergency preparedness for seniors.
Please sign up for emergency alerts so you receive updates about centre hours and safety information directly on your phone. The City continues to work with community agencies to keep our neighbours safe this winter.
