The City of Wrenford Waste Programs team is sharing simple steps to keep your green bin and backyard composter pest-free during the warm summer months. When organic waste sits in the sun, it can attract raccoons, flies, and rodents, but a little extra care goes a long way.
Start by keeping your green bin lid fully closed and latched at all times. If you notice pests around your bin, check for food scraps that have spilled over the edge and rinse the lid with a hose. You can also line your kitchen pail with newspaper or a certified compostable bag before adding scraps. This keeps smells down and makes it easier to dump your waste into the larger outdoor bin without spilling.
For residents using a backyard composter, place it in a shaded spot away from your home and make sure it has a secure mesh screen to keep wildlife out. Layer your food scraps with dry leaves, shredded paper, or straw to balance moisture and reduce odours. Avoid adding meat, dairy, oils, or pet waste to your backyard pile, as these items draw pests quickly.
"Many residents love the idea of composting at home, but summer heat can turn a backyard pile into a magnet for wildlife if it isn't managed properly," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "By following a few basic steps, you can keep your compost working for your garden while keeping animals safely in the wild."
