Starting today, May 22, 2025, Wrenford residents will see updated guidelines for what goes in the blue bin. The changes align with provincial producer responsibility rules and aim to reduce contamination at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility.
If you recycle at the curb, keep your blue bin clean and empty. We no longer accept plastic bags inside the bin. Flexible plastics, such as bread bags and candy wrappers, and Styrofoam food containers are now collected only at the depot. This change supports the provincial Blue Box program and ensures the materials we collect stay clean and sellable.
For residents living in apartment buildings or townhouses, recycling is a requirement. Under the Waste Management By-law 2023-105, multi-family buildings with more than four units must participate in an approved diversion program. Property managers can register their building through the provincial registry. If you live in a multi-unit building and do not yet have recycling service, ask your landlord to register. The city will provide a Waste Diversion Guide for Multi-Unit Buildings once the registration is complete.
"We want recycling to work for everyone," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "When residents sort correctly at the curb, our collection crews move faster and the materials we send to the market stay clean. A quick check of the Waste Wizard before you put something out makes a big difference."
To help you sort, the city has updated the online sorting tool. You can also visit the depot to drop off flexible plastics and Styrofoam. Northgate Drop-off Depot and the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility are open on regular schedules. If you have questions about your bin or your building's service, call 311 or visit 519-555-0100 from outside the city.
