Wrenford Police Service launches new community policing unit

Starting Monday, April 1, 2024, the Wrenford Police Service is rolling out a dedicated community policing unit to strengthen safety and build trust across all six wards. The new unit will be based at the Wrenford Police Service Headquarters on Albert Street and will work closely with residents, local organisations, and city staff to solve neighbourhood issues before they become crimes.

Community policing is about listening first. Officers in this unit will be assigned to specific areas so residents know exactly who to contact with safety concerns. Instead of only responding to 911 calls, these officers will spend their shifts walking the beat, holding monthly drop-in sessions at community centres, and meeting with local groups to plan crime prevention strategies.

“Our goal is to make sure every resident feels safe in their own neighbourhood,” said Chief Andrea Holloway, Chief of the Wrenford Police Service. “By embedding officers in the communities they serve, we can address the root causes of crime, reduce repeat calls for service, and build real partnerships with the people who live here.”

The unit will focus on three main areas: youth engagement, property crime reduction, and support for vulnerable residents. Officers will partner with Tamsin Valley Public Health and local schools to deliver safety workshops. They will also work with the Policing committee to review local crime data and adjust patrols where they are needed most.

Residents can get involved right away. The City is hosting a series of community safety forums starting in May at each ward’s community centre. You can sign up to attend, share your concerns, and help shape the ward’s safety priorities. If you have ideas for how the police can better support your neighbourhood, visit the Community advisory committees page to learn about volunteer roles on the Community Safety Investment Framework Committee, or check the Council page to see how local safety priorities are discussed at City Hall.
