Youth sailing and outdoor water sports

Join our seasonal sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding programmes for youth ages ten to seventeen at Ambrel Lake and the Tamsin River.

Get on the water

Looking for a way to spend your summer or fall outside? Our youth sailing and outdoor water sports programme is for beginners and experienced paddlers ages ten to seventeen. You will learn to handle small boats, practice water safety and enjoy the Tamsin River and Ambrel Lake with friends.

Where we sail and paddle

Most sessions take place at Ambrel Lake Park, which has calm, protected waters ideal for learning. We also run a few river sessions on the Tamsin River Trail when conditions are safe. All sites are managed by the City's Parks & Trails team.

Programme options

We offer three levels so you can progress at your own pace:

  • Wet Feet (ages 10 to 12): Learn the basics of balancing on a kayak or paddleboard. You will stay in shallow water and practice with a lifeguard or instructor nearby.
  • Wave Riders (ages 13 to 15): Move to small sailboats and tandem kayaks. You will learn to read the wind, steer properly and work as a crew.
  • Open Water (ages 16 to 17): Practice longer paddles, racing basics and advanced boat handling. You can join our Junior Sailing Club and enter local regattas.
